Talisay City has again thrown its full support behind the upcoming Cobra Ironman 70.3 Asia Pacific Championships on Aug. 7.

Talisay City is one of the cities that will be part of the race. The others are Mandaue City, Cebu City and main host Lapu-Lapu City.

The start and finish lines of the international triathlon event will be at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City. The swim and the run legs will also be in Lapu-Lapu City while the 90-kilometer bike segment will pass through the cities of Mandaue, Cebu and Talisay.

Sunrise Events Inc. (SEI) general manager Princess Galura met with Talisay City Mayor Eduardo Gullas yesterday at the Talisay City Hall and said that the mayor was very “sincere” in his support for the event.

“He assured us that he will help us in securing the bike course in Talisay City. He said that he tapped six barangays, Talisay City police and the University of the Visayas (UV) students to control the crowd. He will also help us in closing the roads covered in the race,” Galura said.

Prior to the meeting, Galura was a bit worried with the crowd in Talisay City, especially after last year’s accident that involved women’s pro division defending champion Caroline Steffens, who crashed after a child sudenly crossed the street.

“He assured me the safety of the participants. He said that they will deploy enough people on the area. He told me that he wants to contribute to the success of the race that’s why he wants to be very supportive even though he just took office as the city mayor a month ago,” Galura said.

Although there’s an ongoing road widening project by the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) at the Talisay part of the SRP, Galura said that said project is expected to be finished before race day.

“We have to make sure that we get the mayor’s support because we are expecting a faster race this year because the pros are eyeing for the big cash prizes at stake so we can’t risk an accident to happen. We are happy that mayor Gullas answered all of our requests,” added Galura.

Galura already met with Mandaue City Mayor Luigi Quisumbing and Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

A record number of 2,900 plus triathletes from 43 countries will compete in the half IronMan distance of 1.9k swim, 90k bike and 21k run. Around 30 of the world’s best triathletes are also set to compete in the race
