Breast-feeding runner steals show in inaugural IronGirls

HAVE you seen 5-kilometer race where one of the competitors breast-feeds her baby while running?

This scene was witnessed yesterday during the inaugural staging of Iron Girls, a side event in this Sunday’s Cobra Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City.

Rowena Bonilla of Mactan, Cebu grabbed the spotlight Friday evening by doing the unthinkable– running while breast-feeding.

“It’s my second time actually. I’m an ultra-runner and I did it because it is breastfeeding month and I want to raise awareness,” the 33-year-old mother said.

Meanwhile, Pagadian City’s Cresabel Cadion bested over 500 girls by finishing first in the 5-kilometer, non-competitive event.

However, organizers failed to note her time since the event is just a fun run and has no winners after all.

The 23-year-old Cadion who presently resides in Labangon, Cebu City said that the race is her preparation for the upcoming Milo Marathon Eliminations this September.

Sunrise Events Inc. (SEI) General Manager Princess Galura expressed excitement over the success of the event but she insisted that they are not planning to make it a regular competition next year.

“For fun lang muna. No we don’t plan to make it a competition kasi pag may nanalo, hindi na sila mag-eenjoy,” Galura added.
