DPWH exec prefers steel joint to fill gaps in SRP viaduct

REPLACING the expansion joints of the viaduct at the South Road Properties in Cebu City with steel was seen as a long-term solution.

Engr. Nonito Paylado, planning division head of Department of Public Works and Highways in Central Visayas (DPWH-7), said they raised the concern to their central office to also discuss funding of the project.

“Instead of rubber type, a finger type expansion joint made of steel is more durable,” Paylado told reporters during the 888 News forum yesterday at the Marco Polo Plaza.

The DPWH-7 is repairing the gap during nighttime in order not to affect the vehicular traffic.

If there are no rains, Paylado said the repair would be done within a week.

Trucks passing by the area do not also need to reduce their load, said Paylado.

Paylado assured motorists that it is still safe to pass the viaduct.

The gap at the viaduct was observed after the Cebu and Bohol earthquake in 2013.

The gap was then measured at 130 millimeters. But based on their inspection the other day, the gap already reached 140 millimeters.

“The maximum gap is 150 millimeters. So far, it’s okay. If it’s beyond the allowed gap then it would be alarming,” he said.
