Cebuano duathlete Olmilla to try skills in tougher sport
After numerous podium finishes as a duathlete, Cebuano Joland Olmilla wants to take it a step further and test his skills in triathlon.
The 24-year-old Olmilla has amassed several awards in duathlon this year, taking home third place honors in the National Duathlon Championship last September and topping the Primary Group Builders (PGB) duathlon last July. He said he wants to try competing in triathlon races and has in fact signified his intention to join the Cebu City Triathlon (CCT) next year.
“I want to try triathlon because they say it’s more painful than duathlon,” Olmilla said. “I chose to start with the CCT because the swim leg will be at the Cebu City Aquatics Center pool, which is at least safe.”
According to Olmilla, he still considers swimming the toughest part. Although he believes he has improved throughout the years, he still thinks he is not fast enough compared to other triathletes.
But when asked if he was looking to pursue a triathlon career, Olmilla said maybe not just yet.
“This will be just for experience,” Olmilla said.
For now, Olmilla still has his sights on the World Powerman Duathlon Series slated Dec. 4 in Pampanga, where he is set to contend in the short distance category. In last year’s race, Olmilla placed third.
