A BANGKOK-BASED Cebuano is making waves in the field of chess by topping a tough tournament in the Kingdom of Thailand last Sunday.
National Master Leonardo Alidani scored 4.0 points in five rounds to finish first in the Gainsfield Grand Prix 2014 Open category held at the Milano Restaurant, Pro Club Soi 29 Samakee Road Nonthaburi, Thailand.
Alidani was once a regular fixture in tournaments held at the Colonnade Mall in Cebu City.
Also with 4.0 points were Ryan Dungca and Fide Master Deniel Causo but Alidano was declared champin in view of his superior tiebreak output.
US and Filipino chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr., finished fourth overall with 3.5 points, the same output of 5th placer Rhenel Piligros, who topped the Under 1950 category.
Another Bangkok-based Pinoy Eric Calacday and Mary Grace Tambasen of Negros Occidental placed second and third, respectively in the Under 1950 category with 3.0 points apiece alongside Krishi Palab of India, Jei-Chen Ho of Chinese-Taipei and Manas Rao of Thailand.
The one-day tournament was organized by the husband and wife tandem of Henry and Regina Calacday of Gainsfield Chess and Language Centre.
