Hoops Academy: Rocky Alcoseba eager to share what he learned from his dad

Cebu City, Philippines — Rafael “Rocky” Alcoseba is the textbook definition of the old saying “the apple does fall from the tree.”

The son of multi-titled head coach Yayoy Alcoseba, the younger Alcoseba is fast blazing a trail of his own with his own basketball camp called Hoops Academy, which starts on April 22, 2019 at the Ateneo de Cebu basketball courts.

Alcoseba says the camp, of which his father is also a special advisor and a guest coach as well, pays homage to the teachings he learned from the elder Alcoseba.

“Around the dinner table, it was all basketball, why we won, why we lost, what we will do next game, it’s a constant dialogue with basketball plays and strategies. And I had this environment at a very young age. So it was just natural to me,” shared Alcoseba, who added that as far as he can remember, he was always around his dad and the sport. 

“Nag tubo ko sa balay basketball raman gud permi storyahan. Dili gud ko maayo na player pero ang pagsabot sa game na tungod explainan ko niya, kuyog ko sa mga practice niya sa M. Lhuillier, kuyog sa mga players, so basketball murag natural ra sa ako ba tungod bata pako and kuyog nila,” Alcoseba explained.

(I grew up in a house where basketball’s always being talked about. I am not a good player but I can understand the game well because he explains it to me, I go with him to practices with M. Lhuillier, go with the players, so basketball is natural for me because since I was a kid I always was around them.)

It is these lessons and so much more that Alcoseba will try to impart with his very first basketball camp. 

Alcoseba says he vividly remembers his very first experience going to a basketball camp as a young kid.

“To be honest, I didn’t learn a bunch. Because you know as a kid you just want to do, do and do without understanding the why. Kids always have that constant question, why? Why do you do this, why do you do that? That’s why I’m starting this camp to let kids understand the why. Why is dribbling important, why is having a good shooting form important? Because in doing this, we are making them better already.”

Apart from various basketball lessons, the Hoops Academy will immediately give campers a avenue to showcase those said lessons with a five-day tournament coming right after the camp.
