DPWH halts Maguikay flyover work to help decongest Mandaue traffic

By: Norman V. Mendoza March 31,2014 - 05:42 AM

RETROFITTING work on the Maguikay flyover in Mandaue City was suspended by the sixth district engineering office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

In a press conference Renault Ricardo, DPWH assistant district engineer, said the road work worsened traffic congestion in the area, especially for vehicles coming from northern Cebu.

Ricardo said the retrofitting work on the flyover went along with the rehabilitation and drainage improvement works along M.L. Quezon St. in barangay Maguikay resulting in heavy traffic congestion.

He said the retrofitting project is worth P17.6 million and is expected to be completed in 190 days.

Ricardo said work will resume once the rehabilitation and drainage improvements in M.L Quezon street are 90 percent completed.

Completion is scheduled within a year.

May fiesta

Edwin Ermac, head of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM), said traffic will improve in May in time for the city’s fiesta on May 8.

Most of the road repair work will be finished by then.

Myrna dela Cerna, project engineer of the sixth engineering district, said they’ve been upgrading most of the pavements in the city’s roads.

Large bore culverts were installed in flood-prone areas like barangay Basak ahead of the rainy season, she said.
