Montoya rules 1st Mayor Rama chess

Bacolod City’s Edsel Montoya emerged as the king woodpusher yesterday after he topped the inaugural edition of the 2014 Mayor Mike Rama Chess Cup Open Active Tournament at the SM City’s Event Center.

Montoya chalked up a total of 8.9 points in his undefeated run after nine rounds.

The win gave Montoya the open division’s cash prize of P15,000 plus a trophy.

Taking up the second spot in the event organized by the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) in cooperation with the Cebu City government, is Eden Diano, who tallied 7.5 points to pocket P10,000 cash.

Merben Roque (7.5), Kyle Rhenzi Sevillano (7.5) and Kim Steven Yap (7.0) completed the top five finishers, respectively, in the open division. They received P7,000, P5,000 and P3,000 cash, respectively.

The top three finishers in the Kiddies division, on the other hand, are Chris Aldritz Pondoyo, Edsel Vosotros and James Felmanyo Diloy, respectively.

The top three placers in the CEPCA division are Arnolito Cadiz, Peterson Sia and Jojo Muralla, respectively.

The Senior’s division, meanwhile, was ruled by Erwin Ababat. Joyce Lagrosas finished second while Carlos Moreno III placed third.
Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano also took home the Junior’s division title.
