Man stabs grandpa, sets house on fire

By: Rene Alima November 05,2014 - 07:56 AM

A 32-year-old man stabbed his 80-year-old grandfather before setting their house on fire in barangay Hagnaya, San Remigio town, northern Cebu.

Edemil Maglasang surrendered to the police after the incident.

The victim, Elesio Maglasang, sustained a stab wound in the right hand.

SPO1 Joe Johnnsesky Ynot, investigator of the San Remigio Police Station, said it seemed the suspect was mentally unstable during the incident as he was incoherent when investigators tried to talk to him.

Feliza, Elesio’s wife, told police that their grandson was acting unusual when he arrived home around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Feliza recalled that before her grandson went home, she got a text message from him asking for a gun since there were bats inside their house.

Feliza said Edemil appeared drunk when he arrived home.

Feliza said the man kept telling her to give him a knife, a request that she turned down.

Feliza said Edemil found a pair of scissors and suddenly attacked his grandfather, who was lying on a sofa.

Luckily, Eliseo managed to parry the blows and just sustained a minor wound in the hand.
The couple then ran out of the house.

Loud sounds were heard inside the house before it went on fire.

Some neighbors tried to put out the fire to no avail.

FO3 Rolando Martinez of the San Remegio Fire Station said they received the fire alarm at 10:15 p.m.

The fire station was about three kilometers from barangay Hagnaya.

Martinez said the house was already gutted when firefighters arrived,

Fire damage was pegged at P500,000.

Police said an investigation will be made to determine what triggered the violence.

Police said charges are being readied against Elesio.
