CEBU CITY, Philippines — Over a hundred woodpushers are expected to vie in the 2nd Councilor Rey Gealon Chess Tournament on June 30 at the Cebu Chess Club, located on the fourth floor of Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

For a couple of years, Gealon, a councilor of Cebu City, has been organizing both chess and scrabble tournaments with the hope of discovering new talents in these tactical board sports.

Most recently, Gealon organized a skateboarding event in Talisay City, south Cebu, which was participated in by around 300 skaters earlier this month. Besides that, he also organizes small-stakes cycling competitions, airsoft tournaments, and sponsors cyclists and runners in Cebu.

This time, he goes all in by putting up over P30,000 in cash prizes that will be given to the winning woodpushers in the tournament.

Additionally, he partnered with Cebu’s premier chess group, the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA), in organizing this woodpushing tilt.

The champion of this tournament will take home P7,000, while the second to fifth placers will receive P5,000, P3,000, P2,000, and P1,000, respectively. The sixth to tenth will get P700 each, while the eleventh to fifteenth will take home P500 apiece.

A P1,000 bonus will be handed out to the top collegiate finisher (under 22), P700 to the top Cepcans A and B and lady player, and P500 to the top senior (60 and above) and kiddies (boys and girls 10 and under).

The tournament will follow a standard 9-round Swiss system format.

The registration fee is pegged at P250 for regular players and P150 for those with discounts such as CEPCA members, senior citizens, PWDs, ladies, and kids 12 years old and below. Those interested in joining can contact Kevin Yap (09458559800) or visit the Cebu School of Chess Facebook page.
