‘Pahugyaw sa Kabukiran’ opens in Malubog

An agro-trade fair, Pinoy games and festival dance performances opened yesterday the first “Pahugyaw sa Kabukiran” organized by the Cebu City Association of Barangay Councils (ABC).

Barangay chairman Elvis Narra of Adlaon, who is also the overall chairman of the activity, said the Pahugyaw aims to showcase the produce and attractions of the city’s 31 mountain barangays which some Cebaunos may be unaware of.

Narra said many people may not have known that Cebu City and not Mindanao is the number-one producer of lettuce.

He said the mountain barangays of Sudlon 1 and II are the number-one lettuce producers in the country while barangays Adloan, Sirao and Taptap produce the best sweet corn.

“Among tumong sa pagpahigayon aning pahugyaw is to showcase about sa kabukiran. Makit-an sa kadaghanan nga dili lang sa taga siyudad apil na gani foreign investors unsa man pud to mga hiyas sa mountain barangay. Sama sa caves, waterfalls unya ilabi na agricultural products (Our aim for the Pahugyaw is to showcase our mountain barangays. We want those from the city and foreign investors to see the treasures of our mountain barangays such as caves, waterfalls and most of all our agricultural products),” he said.

The Pahugyaw, which was held on a vacant lot located along the Transcentral Highway in barangay Malubog, is a nine-day activity (from June 6 to June 14) which opened with a motorcade participated by representatives from 31 mountain barangays.  The 6 a.m. motorcade started in Cebu City with Malubog as the terminus.

Aside from the agro-fair, organizers also held free eye checkups for the mountain residents and an eco-tour for guests.

Other activities that will be held during the week will include a mountain run; singing contest called”;  cooking contest; zumba classes; beauty pageants; bingo social; a 2-cock derby; and a motocross competition.

Narra said ecotourism sites in Cebu City’s  mountains is a good alternative to malls, parks and other spots located in the urban barangays.
