MORE than 10,000 persons with disability (PWDs) received their P1,000 cash aid in their respective barangays yesterday.
Among the recipients was 29-year-old Angeli Lim who has cerebral palsy.
A resident of barangay Guadalupe, Lim was wheeled into the Guadalupe sports center by her mother, Rosalina Lim to join 593 other beneficiaries.
“We can use this to buy medicine for Angeli, although the amount is small for Angeli’s expensive medicine. It would be so much better if we could have a medicine discount if they can’t increase the cash assistance,” the elder Lim said.
Lim’s daughter runs up P1,000 in medical bills a week as she has to take various medicines to avoid seizures.
Ester Concha, Department of Social Welfare Services (DSWS) said there is a 20 percent discount for medicines for PWDs.
“This cash assistance of P1,000 is the second distribution for PWDs for the year, so there is still P3,000 left to distribute. As much as we want to increase it, there are so many things we have to look out for,” City Treasurer Diwa Cuevas said.
About P50 million was budgeted for the cash assistance of registered PWDs this year.
The city will allocate P120 million for the senior citizens’ cash aid and P7 million for the honoraria of barangay officials today./UP Cebu Intern Juli Ann M. Sibi
