The Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development granted starter kits to 85 persons with disabilities (PWDs) who graduated recently at the Area Vocational Rehabilitation Center (AVRC-II) in barangay Labangon, Cebu City.

The graduates received P20,000 worth of materials to start their own business.

Angelita Rabaya, mother of housekeeping graduate Radiel Rabaya, expressed gratitude to the DSWD in her speech at the graduation ceremony.

“Giadto among balay kay gitan-aw ug asa ibutang ang mga gamit nga ihatag sa DSWD (They went to our house to inspect the area where the things will be placed),” she said.

“Musuporta gyud ko sa akong anak. Kitang mga ginikanan dapat musuporta dyud sa atong mga anak (I should support my child. We, parents, should support our children),” Rabaya added.

“Bulahan mo kay sa kadaghang tawo diri sa Region 7, kamo ang nakadawat ani nga mga starter kits (You are fortunate because of all the people in Region 7, you are the ones to receive these starter kits),” said DSWD Assistant Regional Director for Operations Shalaine Marie Lucero in her message to the graduates.

Lucero said the DSWD is doing everything to help the PWDs since these persons can be an asset  if given the chance.

Lucero also encouraged the graduates to spread the word about AVRC-II to their friends and relatives and to let them avail of the center’s services.

The AVRC-II offers vocational courses, such as  housekeeping, dress and apparel technology, commercial cooking, basic cosmetology, consumer electronics repair, massage therapy, computer technology, and commercial arts and crafts. /PR – UP-Cebu Intern Patricia Bayno
