STREET dancing and a siomai-making contest highlighted yesterday’s opening salvo of barangay Tisa’s Siomai Festival in Cebu City.
It drew almost 200 spectators to a two-hour demonstration of pork dumplings prepared in a variety of ways.
“It was generally peaceful and, may I say, successful. There was no rain. For how many days, it was raining. Fortunately, it was a sunny day,” said Tisa barangay councilor Jong Alcazaren, festival chairman.
A Siomai jingle had barangay officials and students dancing to the beat.
The street dancing started in barangay Labangon and Tisa boundary and ended at the barangay hall. One lane was temporarily closed for the event.
In a siomai-making contest, three of the best-tasting dumplings among seven entries were selected
The siomai prepared by the group Element won first place followed by the siomai of Braddex and Way Tugpahay in third place. All contestants are from the barangay.
The steamed dumplings from Chinese cuisine reached the height of its popularity as street food in recent years with the best-tasting siomai coming from food vendors in barangay Tisa.
“The participants are those who are really making and selling siomai here in our barangay,” Alcazaren said.
The participants were given 45 minutes to prepare siomai in different ways and present them to judges.
The biggest siomai was won by Braddex.
