Petron Goldberry, Bayfront log wins
THE DEFENDING champion Petron Goldberry and the surprising Bayfront Hotel Cebu took a step closer to forging a title showdown as they hurdled their respective opponents at the start of the semifinal round of Division A in the 20th Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (SHAABAA) Cup on Sunday at the Magis Eagles Arena in Canduman, Mandaue City.
Petron Goldberry took care of business against the Cebu Landmasters in Game 1 of the best-of-three series, 80-70.
Five players scored in double-figures for the reigning titleholder led by the 18 of Leigh Dixon. Veteran guard Dave Ting submitted 16 while Justin Huang punched in 15. Ed Macasling and Job Shan added 14 apiece for a Petron Goldberry squad that made its move in the second, where it outscored the Landmasters, 19-11, to bring a 37-30 lead into halftime.
In the other semis pairing, Bayfront Hotel continued on its Cinderella-like run as it edged the RDAK Stallions, 67-65.
The win did not come on a silver platter for Bayfront as it had to survive a huge comeback try from the Stallions down the stretch.
Eldie and Eduard Cabahug scored 18 each to lead the charge for Bayfront while Antonio Datan added 12.
In Game 1 of the Division B finals, the RDAK Transporters are a win away from repeating as champions as they creamed the Dynamic Power, 50-44.
