Early morning accident stalled traffic along UN Avenue in Mandaue City
TRAFFIC at a busy intersection along United Nations Avenue and Plaridel Street in Mandaue City was stalled for at least an hour following an early morning accident involving two vehicles.
A toppled lamp post and a public utility jeep (PUJ) driven by Jimmy Bongaos that climbed the center island of UN Avenue obstructed traffic flow in the area located close to the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.
Bongaos was heading for Mandaue City from Lapulapu City when he swerved to the opposite lane to avoid a vehicle that cut through his path but instead hit a car driven by Jurich Lyn Sanchez.
After hitting Sanches’ car, the PUJ went on to crash into a lamppost located on a center island, which then toppled into the middle of the street. The PUJ came to a full stop after it stuck in the middle of the center island, said Police Officer 2 Ruben Dayon of the Mandaue City Traffic Division.
He said it was fortunate that Bongaos, 48, and his 16 passengers were not harmed by the accident. Dayon said Bongaos was not detained but would have have to face a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting to multiple damage to property.
Bongaos, a resident of Barangay Ibo in Lapulapu City, insisted he could not be faulted for the accident.
He said his PUJ (GWM 460) was traversing at only 40 kilometers per hour. He said he was about to make a left turn to Plaridel Street when another vehicle suddenly crossed the junction.
He said he was forced to swerve to the left to avoid the crossing vehicle and instead hit the front of the car driven by Sanchez. Sanchez, 27, of Lapulapu City, was then traveling on the right lane of UN Avenue
