The 20,000 runners in today’s 40th National Milo Marathon-Cebu Leg can expect a cold and rainy race.

According to weather bureau Pagasa, there’s a big chance of rain in the morning and in the afternoon. There’s 90 percent precipitation and 70 percent humidity today.

The race will start in front of the Cebu Normal University in Osmeña Boulevard and will end at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) track oval.

The race will feature a 21-kilometer half marathon, 10k,5k and 3k distances.

To ensure security, race organizers led by Ricky Ballesteros will be deploying a total of 1,136 volunteers composed of race marshals, PNP personnel, barangay tanods, traffic enforcers and LGU personnel as well as K9 units.

Organizers advised runners to be vigilant all the time in light of the Davao City bombing last Sept. 2. They also decided to put the baggage area in a secured spot inside the CCSC to ensure everyone’s safety.

Top contenders

Defending champions Noel Tillor of Bogo City and Sultan Kudarat’s Ruffa Sorongon will defend their titles and go for the P10,000 prize in the premier 21k category. Winners in this division will also earn seats to the national finals on Dec. 4 in Iloilo City.

The second and third placers in the 21k race will each receive P6,000 and P4,000 and P2,000 for the fourth placers with trophies. The fifth to 10th placers will get P1,000 each and medals.

The 5k,10k and 3k winners will also get cash.
