Baby Warriors pad lead over UC to virtually seal Cebu City Olympics overall crown

The University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED) virtually put a clamp on another overall crown in the 24th Cebu City Olympics after the Baby Warriors zoomed past archrival University of Cebu (UC) after yesterday’s penultimate day of competition held in different venues around the city.
Based on official results released as of 4 p.m. yesterday, USC-BED jacked up its gold-silver-bronze medal hoard to 45-32-33 in the combined elementary and secondary divisions.
UC, the 22-time overall champion who lost its crown last year, has a three-day tally of 27-18-22 with only a handful of finals left in the 21-event, school-based meet including basketball, football, volleyball, gymnastics, karatedo, secondary taekwondo and chess.
USC-BED won eight golds yesterday including five from its powerhouse athletics squad and three from lawn tennis.
The Baby Warriors ruled the 4×100-meter relay races in elementary boys and girls and secondary boys and the 4×400-meter relay races in elementary girls and secondary boys.
UC meanwhile, bagged five gold medals in athletics courtesy of its secondary girls’ 4x100meter relay (52.97 seconds), secondary girls 4x400meter relay (4 minutes and 35.51 secs.), John Marvin Rafols and Jhuvan Jhen Baculot in secondary boys and secondary girls triple jump, respectively, and Ara Aranasa in secondary girls javelin throw (27.95 meters).
Lawn tennis
In lawn tennis, USC collected golds through Francis Lambayan, who toppled University of the Visayas’ Norman Joseph Enriquez, 8-6 in secondary boys singles; secondary boys doubles of Christopher Encarnacion and Jermaine Laurel who blanked North District 8’s Victor Minoza and Crewe Gil Gemos, 8-0; and Beverly Enriquez and Patricia Tapdasan who bested ND 8’s Mary Nathalie Cobarde and Jeremi Cobarde, 8-0 in secondary girls doubles.
The elementary girls’ doubles title was won by ND 6’s Georgia Cubcuban and Christine Lemorin, who routed ND 8’s Francine del Rosario and Camille Justimbaste, 8-0.
The secondary girls singles gold was won by Bright Academy’s Zethley Mae Alferez who nipped teammate, Shyne Villareal, 8-6 while the boys elementary doubles gold went to the Banilad Elementary School tandem of Darwin Casas and Elijah James Villas who gave ND 8 the gilt after crushing Pardo’s Hans Cabellon and Aaron Kevin Tabura, 8-2.
Meanwhile, the featured demonstration sports—futsal, wushu, billiards and wrestling—will take place today.
