Talisay gang fight: Leaders of two groups arrested
CEBU CITY, Philippines —Two alleged gang leaders, whose groups were involved in a riot in Talisay City, Cebu, were arrested in a hot-pursuit operation on Monday night, October 3, 2022.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Randy Caballes, chief of Talisay City Police Station, identified these two as Mark Mitchell Canillo, 18, a resident of Barangay Maghaway and Jay-R Caballero, 18, of Barangay Tabunok.
Canillo is allegedly the leader and founder of the Barangay Maghaway 16 gang while Caballero is the leader of Batang Dike Gang. Police confiscated two .38 revolvers from the two.
Police also rescued several of the gang’s members, who were minors.
The two groups were involved in a riot against other groups in Barangay Linao last October 2, wherein one gang member got injured, not because of the fight but because he got hit by a passing motorcycle while the commotion was ongoing on the street.
A netizen captured part of the incident in a video shared on social media.
Caballes said that the riot allegedly stemmed from the grudges among gang members over relationships with girls.
These groups were said to be throwing bottles against members of a group called Batang Cebu and GSK, whose members are also minors.
Meanwhile, Police Lieutenant Colonel Mark Gifter Sucalit, deputy provincial director for operations of the Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO), said that this incident remains an isolated case.
Sucalit said he already directed all station commanders to intensify the curfew implementation and their collaboration with the youth and the community on their peace and order programs.
Police Colonel Rommel Ochave, CPPO director, earlier visited the Talisay City Police Station and checked the deployment and operational readiness of the personnel. He also reminded police to strictly implement the curfew hours in the city, which runs from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
