Four students of the Mandaue City Science High School came up with their “fire pail” plan as part of their culmination activity in the Young Minds Academy Season 8 sponsored by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI).

Immaculate Concepcion Cazar, Belle Frances Timosa, Mariah Krystel Ocarol and Laarnie Lagura presented their “fire pail” plan which involves using pails or any recyclable container and fill it with baking soda to put out fires.

They and 85 other scholars were asked to present their Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Climate Change Adaptation plan.

They were divided into two groups consisting of Generation A composed of 17-20 years old and the Generation B composed of 12-16 years old students.

Cazar, Timosa, Ocarol and Lagura said they took inspiration from the fire victims living in narrow areas and recent fire outbreaks like the one that occurred in a warehouse containing plastic products in barangay Looc, Mandaue City last August 8.

SF03 Roylin Maratas, chief investigator of the Cebu City Fire Department said baking soda is ideal because it has carbon dioxide components that dispel combustion.
