CEBU CITY, Philippines — Police are trying to track down 17 juveniles who escaped the Operation Second Chance facility in Barangay Kalunasan in Cebu City on Wednesday morning, January 11, 2023.

Police Major Armando Labora, chief of the Guadalupe Police Station, confirmed the escape of the 17 juveniles, which happened past 6 a.m. while staff of the facility served the breakfast for the minors.

Retired BJMP Major Merlina Metante, head of the Operation Second Chance, said those who escaped are those involved in illegal drugs and murder.

She said they already alerted all police stations for the recovery operations of the 17 minors.

For her part, Police Lieutenant Colonel Maria Theresa Macatangay, information officer of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said that they have assigned teams who are tasked to locate these minors and coordinate with their respective parents or guardians for their recovery.

Macatangay added that they continue to investigate the circumstance behind the escape of these 17 juveniles.

“Gi timing ni nila nga panahon sa ilaha nga breakfast ba. At that moment nga giablihan ang ilang puy-anan, gi timing pod nila nga pagka abli nanglusot sad sila so nakurat ang mga personnel,” Macatangay said.

They have also yet to know what pushed these minors to leave the facility.

“One of the factors nga atoang gi consider is kakulangan gyud sa personnel who are dedicated to oversee the security operations in the area. Apart ana, daghan pa tag nakit an nga pwede nato ika improve sa seguridad ana nga facility,” Macatangay added.
