LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines — The Lapu-Lapu City government has temporarily canceled the “Libreng Serbisyo” program.

Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan said this would only be temporary because of the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) on October 30.

Bringing basic services closer to Oponganons

Libreng Serbisyo is a program initiated by the city to take the basic services closer to the doorstep of each Oponganon.

Every Friday, the city would visit different barangays and conduct free services such as medical, dental, and legal services.

“Gusto nako ipahibalo ang tanan nga kasamtangan natong gi-cancel ang pagpahigayon sa Libreng Serbisyo para sa Tanan sa matag barangay isip pagsugod sa guidelines sa Comelec para sa umaabot nga Barangay and SK Elections,” Chan said in a Facebook post.

(We would like to inform all that we are temporarily canceling the holding of the Libreng Serbisyo for all in every Barangay (to comply with) the start of the guidelines of the Comelec for the upcoming Barangay and SK elections.)

Lapu-Lapu mayor: Comelec order to be followed

“Sayud ko nga mao gyud ni ang inyung kanunayng gi-atangan matag semana pero kinahanglan nato sundon ang mando sa Comelec,” he said.

(I know that this is what you would wait for every week but we should follow the order of the Comelec.)

Chan, however, assured that the “Libreng Serbisyo” would return right after the BSKE 2023.

Libreng Serbisyo to return in Lapu-Lapu after polls

“Di kita angay mabalaka kay mobalik ra kita pagkahuman sa eleksyon kay di kita moundang sa paghatod sa atong libreng mga serbisyo ug ipaduol ang gobyerno ngadto sa mga katawhan,” he said.

(We should not worry because we will return (Libreng Serbisyo) after the elections because we will not stop to bring our free services and to bring the government nearer to the people.)

The Comelec-Cebu Province has earlier revealed that a total of 43,492 individuals filed their respective Certificate of Candidacy (COC) during the filing period from August 28 to September 2.

Cebu has a total of 1,203 barangays, including the highly urbanized cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu.
