Alternative playing venues in place in case of bad weather— Pages

The unpredictable weather in Cebu will not be a major problem for Palarong Pambansa 2024 after the organizers gave the assurance that contingency measures are in place for the week-long meet.

Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) Chairman John Pages told the media that they have identified alternative venues for outdoor sports that will be affected by heavy downpour and that they would carry on the games until the evening if the weather will not be favorable early in the day during the meet scheduled from July 11 to 15.

Palarong Pambansa mascot

The official mascot of the Palarong Pambansa is the “Matatag,” inspired by Cebu’s rarest bird, the Cebu Flowerpecker.

The Cebu Flowerpecker was once declared instinct, but its species was rediscovered in 1992. Matatag represents not just its namesake, but also Palaro’s theme “Beyond Sports.”

CCSC oval to undergo repairs before Palarong Pambansa kickoff

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Palarong Pambansa 2024 organizers assured all athletes competing in the medal-rich track and field event that the newly-renovated rubberized track oval of the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) will be ‘adjusted and repaired’ prior to the official start of the games on July 11.

Francis Cesar Bringas, the assistant secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), announced that the rubberized track oval will be ready come Thursday’s kick off of the centerpiece track and field event.

Palarong Pambansa 2024: Dengue fever sidelines 2 athletes

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Two student athletes, who will be participating in the Palarong Pambansa 2024, were confirmed of having dengue fever.

Dr. Peter Mancao, chief of Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC), told reporters on Monday, July 8, that the patients were already admitted at the CCMC since Friday.

Pagasa forecasts fair weather in Metro Cebu for Palarong Pambansa week

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Delegates and the public will be able to experience a fair weather throughout the week for Palarong Pambansa 2024.

Engineer Alfredo Quiblat Jr., chief of Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) in Mactan, on Monday, July 8 said that no typhoons or low-pressure area are expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this week, affecting Metro Cebu.

Next week, from July 16 to July 18, there is expected to be a low likelihood of typhoons entering PAR.

Cebu City now 100% ready for Palaro hosting – Raymond

With two days left before the official kickoff of Palarong Pambansa 2024, acting Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia said that everything is now in place.

“We’re very much prepared akong gi tan-aw nga murag naa jud tas one hundred percent ani obviously, kay tungod gyud sa atong mga preparations nga gipangbuhat,” he said.

Still, Garcia said that they will continue to look into the needs of the visiting student-athletes to address their concerns, including the need for stable water supply at the billeting quarters and conduct of extensive price monitor to make sure that they do not end up buying overpriced goods.

CCSC’s rubberized track oval shows ‘visible signs’ of damage

The condition of the newly-renovated rubberized track oval at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) has sparked concerns less than a week before the official start of Palarong Pambansa 2024, following reports of ‘visible signs’ of damage.

Netizens have also expressed their frustrations on social upon learning of the damages found on the oval.Observations were raised on the detachment of the rubber from its base, a bumpy surface, and the presence of water trapped inside the rubber base, among others.

‘Olympics-inspired’ medical facilities, team ready to aid athletes

Renowned sports physician Dr. Rhoel O. Dejaño left no stone unturned in making sure that the Palarong Pambansa’s medical team is ready for the week-long competition next week.

In an interview, Dejaño, the “Sportsman of the Year” awardee of the 38th SAC-SMB Cebu Sports Awards told CDN Digital that he planned and designed Palarong Pambansa’s medical team from the Olympics.

Dejaño followed such a blueprint after he served as one of the volunteer sports physicians in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Fast forward to 2024, Dejaño was tasked to lead Palarong Pambansa’s medical team that will oversee the welfare of more than 12,000 athletes from 19 regions competing in 34 sports.

Slight changes were made to the official playing venues of the Palarong Pambansa 2024.

This was officially announced  by Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) Chairman John Pages, who is also one of Palarong Pambansa’s overall organizers.

Pages said that it’s important to announce the changes for everyone’s awareness, especially the delegates and their families who will be here in Cebu during the meet.

Palarong Pambansa 2024 app now available for download

The Palarong Pambansa 2024 App can now be downloaded from both the iOS App Store and Android’s Play Store starting today, June 5.

Four days before the opening of the most-awaited, grandest week-long sports celebration in the country, Palaro enthusiasts can now access the app and view the game schedules on the Palarong Pambansa official website.

For the first time, Palarong Pambansa will feature a new app offering YouTube live streams of games, venues, medal standings, news updates, and tourist spots near the venues.

Palarong Pambansa 2024 will be a Palaro of many firsts

Cebu City is set to add exciting innovations when it hosts the Palarong Pambansa 2024 to level up the excitement about the national games.

Capitol, two cities unite to back Cebu City’s Palaro hosting

The Cebu Provincial Government and highly-urbanized cities have pledged their full support for Cebu City’s upcoming hosting of the Palarong Pambansa in July 2024.

The aim is to transform the event into a significant tourism and economic boost.

Governor Gwen Garcia announced that Cebu Province, along with cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu, will collaborate with Cebu City to ensure the success of the Palarong Pambansa 2024.

Weather contingency plans for Palarong Pambansa 2024

With two to three typhoons expected to enter the Philippines this month according to PAGASA, many are wary about the weather for the upcoming Palarong Pambansa, which will kick off from July 9-16 at various venues.

However, the Palarong Pambansa local organizers have already implemented contingency plans to ensure the games will continue with minimal disruptions during the rainy season.

According to Assistant School Division Superintendent Adolf Aguilar of DepEd Cebu City, they have already observed how Palaro organizers handled weather issues during last year’s games in Marikina.

VP Sara to attend Palarong Pambansa 2024 opening event

Vice President Sara Duterte has confirmed that she will be present during the upcoming opening ceremony of the Palarong Pambansa 2024 in Cebu City.

She announced this to local media during an ambush interview in Cebu City on Saturday, June 29.

Palarong Pambansa 2024 will take place from July 6 to 16, with the opening ceremony scheduled on July 9 at the Cebu City Sports Center. Aside from Palaro, she will also be attending other events such as the National Learners’ Convergence and a national press conference in the province in July.

The official billeting quarters of the 17 regions vying in July’s Palarong Pambansa has been officially announced by the local organizers.

Around 10,000 to 12,000 athletes, excluding delegates from the said regions will converge in Cebu for the week-long national-level meet backed by the Department of Education (DepEd).
