Police arrested the man who killed his sister-in-law in her house in barangay Poblacion, Talisay City Sunday morning.
Elements of the Cebu City Public Safety Company (CCPSC) found Alfonso Saballa, 35, in an abandoned hut in barangay Toong, Cebu City at around 10 a.m. yesterday.
Saballa did not resist arrest.
He was identified as the one who killed Manilyn Saballa, the wife of his older brother who is an overseas worker.
Manilyn, 27, was found naked in a canal under her house with stab wounds in her neck and face. A piece of iron wire was coiled around her neck.
SPO3 Rodrigo Deveraturda of CCPSC said residents of the upland barangay noticed Saballa’s unsual behavior. He was seen sleeping near a river Sunday night.
Saballa admitted killing Manilyn but denied raping her.
He also admitted that he used drugs before committing the crime to give him enough courage to do it. He said he attempted to kill her twice in the past but he failed.
Alfonso said he was mad at Marilyn for reported to his mother about his drug habit.

“Tungod na sa akong kalagot ba kay manghilabot siyag dili iyaha nga problema kana bitaw parte sa bisyo. Makigtabi ni mama unya ako maoy kasuk-an. Palayason palang ta,” he said. (I was mad because she meddled in my affairs especially my vices. She reported to my mother and I got scolded.)
Saballa said he entered Manilyn’s room and struck her head with a hammer last Sunday morning. Then she choked her with a piece of wire and pushed her into the canal through the window.
Before leaving, he attempted to set her house on fire but decide to put out the fire to spare the houses of his relatives nearby.
He went to Campo 4, a mountain barangay in Talisay City and burned the house of a relative with whom he had a conflict in the past.
From Campo 4, he went to barangay Toong until his arrest yesterday.
Talisay City Police deputy chief Insp. Windell Abellana said their case against Saballa was strong since he admitted to the crime.
Police still waiting for the autopsy report to determine if Manilyn was raped.
