A five-year-old boy died after being hit by a white van along the national highway in barangay Palanas, Ronda town at 9:13 a.m. last Saturday.
The victim identified as James Caembre Requilme, a resident of barangay Pulpogan, Consolacion town was with his parents when the accident occurred, PO3 Pepo Ansag of the Ronda police said.
“Kalit ra nidagan ang bata unya na-igo sa bumper (The child ran across the road and was hit by the van’s bumper),” Ansag said.
The 35-year-old driver identified as Jezelito Moreno Cuevas was headed to barangay Poblacion, Ronda when his vehicle hit the victim.
He sped away and turned himself in to the Dumanjug police precinct.
PO2 Jeffrey Alpas of the Dumanjug police said Cuevas told them that he felt it would be safer for him not to stop and help the parents.
Cuevas, a resident of barangay Buhisan, Cebu City, said he felt guilty afterwards.
“Mas pabor siya diri (It was more favorable for him to come here in Dumanjug),” Alpas said.
He said they handed Cuevas over to the Ronda police precinct.
Alpas said Cuevas didn’t undergo drug testing since it appeared to be an accident.
The parents will file a complaint-affidavit against Cuevas tomorrow. /Angeli Sarmiento,
