Rama approves ‘Green Loop’ road scheme

By: Jose Santino S. Bunachita September 04,2014 - 06:03 PM

The planned “Green Loop” road sharing experiment to be piloted in Cebu City will push through after securing approval from Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama. Rama met with proponents of the “Green Loop” road sharing scheme led by ecology lawyer Antonio Oposa, Marc Canton of the Movement for a Livable Cebu (MLC), and Architect Joseph Michael “Yumi” Espina.

“I have no problem with testing it. We will try that. But I told them to do a walk through first. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no problem in sampling. But before we think of macro, let’s go micro first and test the terrain,” Rama told reporters.

The Green Loop is a road sharing experiment in which motorists will have to travel beside pedestrians and bikers in an effort to decongest the major streets in Metro Cebu. Rafael Yap, Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) executive director, said it was decided during the meeting that the road sharing will be implemented along Mango and Gorordo Avenues., Escario Street, and Osmeña Boulevard.

Another coordination meeting is scheduled on Sept. 9 in which a working core group of the proponents and the city officials will discuss and decide on the specifics of the implementation of the experiment.

City Administrator Lucelle Mercado, who also attended the meeting, said they are hoping to implement the experiment tentatively by September 21.
