Reach your peak potential at any sport without worrying about medical conditions with The Hospital at Maayo‘s comprehensive Athletics programs.
The Athletics Program is The Hospital at Maayo‘s newest innovative health product; it caters to the diverse fitness needs of athletes and active individuals.
The Athletics Program offers a holistic approach to wellness for different ages and fitness levels.
“Health and wellbeing is a top priority at the Hospital at Maayo; we’re not only centered on disease medication or illness treatment but more so on disease prevention and healthful living,” said Dr. Maria Carmina Joyce Alferez, the hospital’s chief of clinics.
She explained that the Athletics Program is a way of getting ahead of your health with services and amenities such as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET), and physical rehabilitation for optimizing fitness performance.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
“Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is used in sports-related injuries and post-operative management. It lessens inflammation, increases blood flow, boosts endurance, and speeds up recovery,” said Orthopedics Surgeon Dr. Pia Quinones.
The HBOT chamber can accommodate 11 people and is also used for skin rejuvenation, anti-aging, and treatment for various health problems, including carbon monoxide poisoning, diabetic foot ulcer, and decompression sickness for scuba divers.
Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Testing
Dr. Adrian Christopher Lu, a pulmonologist trained to analyze a CPET result, said that the CPET measures the VO2 Max or the oxygen level the body can absorb during the peak of exercise.
“There are a lot of connotations about VO2 Max, especially in sports, like how much you can perform in sports, how well can you do in sports, and how much you can improve in sports,” he added.
Patients who undergo CPET run on a treadmill or cycle on a stationary bike. They also wear a face mask with sensors measuring oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production during the test. They also have Electrocardiogram (EGC) leads placed on the chest area to check the heart rate and any heart problems. The tests take about 15 to 20 minutes.
“It can give information about how your metabolics work, your level of VO2 max, and how you can use your heart rate to gauge your level of effort,” Lu added.
The The Hospital at Maayo’s Physical Wellness and Rehabilitation Unit (PWRU) offers outpatient physical rehab services to individuals with neurologic and musculoskeletal conditions and those who want to achieve holistic wellness.
“We are there to support the specific movements required for each sport. We take time to analyze which component the individual lacks,” said Team Lead Physical Therapist Gio Tecson.
The PWRU also has a therapeutic wellness pool, which combines fresh and saltwater so swimmers can float better. They also have a wheelchair-friendly ramp for lesser risk. They also have fitness training in their wellness gym and other services like manual therapy, pain management, and physiatric evaluation and assessment.
The Athletics Program participants get personalized coaching from Maayo’s certified fitness trainers, who tailor workout plans and testing protocols to individual needs based on their health and sports-specific goals.
