“Put your gifts at the service of one another.”
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma issued this challenge to journalists before handing out awards to media outfits and individuals during the biennial Cebu Archdiocesan Mass Media Awards (CAMMA) at the SM Cinema 1 yesterday.
Even with bad news happening, the 65-year-old prelate said journalists can find something to bring out God’s message to the world.
“This is an imperfect world but there are many things we can do. God gave you gifts so put your gifts at the service of the community,” said Palma.
“It is good to build what is true, good, and beautiful.”
Cebu Daily News reporter Ador Vincent Mayol received two awards: Best in News Writing and Best in Feature Writing.
His account of a Walk With Jesus dawn procession for the Sto. Niño novena made it to the front page in Jan. 10, 2014 and was part of a body of deadline writing work submitted for the CAMMA.
His interviews with inmates and jail officials for a series on overcrowded jails in “Journey Behind Bars” took him more than two months to research, the way he immersed to write features on persons with disabilities, and children abused by their families for cyberporn clients.
