Mining executive aims for Cebu’s 7th district congressional seat

Businessman Joselito “Lito” Navarro aims to be the next elected representative of Cebu’s seventh district.

Navarro decided to seek an electoral position for the first time after witnessing the plight of the residents in the district where he spent most of his life in. 

He was born in Cebu City but was a student in elementary and highschool in Badian town in southern Cebu.  

Navarro, who is the owner of a mining company in Badian, is running for office for the first time in the 2025 midterm elections.

MTP backs Archival’s bid for Cebu City mayor

Members of the Movement for Transformative Politics (MTP) have joined the roster of supporters to back incumbent Cebu City Councilor Nestor Archival’s mayoral race.

MTP members composed of businessmen, educators, representatives of urban poor, and transportation group, gathered in Cebu City on Monday to endorse and pledged their support to Archival, who is set to file his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) on Tuesday, October 8.

The MTP said in a collective statement that they decided to support Archival as they saw him as someone who would pursue their goals and objectives for the government of Cebu City.

Gwen Garcia files COC for Cebu governor but no runningmate yet

Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, has filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) for her reelection bid in the upcoming 2025 elections.

Garcia submitted her COC at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, which is the last day of COC filing for next year’s National and Local Elections.

Comelec urges aspirants not to wait for Oct. 8 to file COCs

CEBU CITY, Philippines –An official of the Commission on Elections in Central Visayas is urging those who intend to seek elective posts next year not to wait for the October 8 deadline to file their Certificates of Candidacy (COC).

Lawyer Francisco Pobe, director of Comelec Central Visayas Office, said that risks come with filing on deadline.

“If the clock strikes 5 p.m. and they haven’t filed, they won’t be accommodated. We’re very strict about this,” he said.

“We urge candidates to file within the given timeframe. We will accommodate everyone, but it has to be done before 5 p.m.,” he added.

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Ex-officio Councilor Franklyn Ong assured the public that their alliance with the Partido Barug Team Rama remained strong, despite the Ombudsman’s ruling on Mayor Michael Rama’s nepotism case.

Ong, the leading figure of the BagOng Sugbo movement, which recently formed an official coalition with Partido Barug, said that the alliance with preventively suspended Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama was unshaken.

He mentioned that they anticipated rumors and challenges but remained united and focused on the coalition’s political goals.

CEBU CITY, Philippines – Julieto Cu, a 58-year-old independent aspirant from Barangay Guadalupe, officially filed his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for Cebu City mayor on Friday, October 4.

He is the second independent aspirant to date to vie for a position in the 2025 midterm elections. He will challenge mayoral aspirant and reelectionist, preventively suspended Mayor Michael Rama, who filed his candidacy on October 3.

Cu, a former corporate marketing employee, joins the race after Abraham Verdida, a 57-year-old taxi driver, who was the first to file his COC on October 1 for the Cebu City Council. Both candidates represent independent bids for public office.

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Partido Barug BagOng Sugbo Team Rama officially filed candidacies for the 2025 midterm elections on October 3.

Led by preventively suspended Mayor Michael Rama, the team began the day by attending a mass before heading to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office to submit their candidacies. They were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd of supporters.

CEBU CITY, Philippines — A doctor of veterinary medicine is running as a provincial board member of Cebu’s 2nd district to give voters an “alternative” and to change politics.

Dr. Odysseus “Ody” Camarillo from Argao in southern Cebu, filed his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) on the second day of the filing period at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Cebu Provincial Office.

Camarillo was also the third to file his COC on Tuesday.

Archival: BOPK slate complete, ready to file candidacies

City Councilor Nestor Archival, the standard-bearer of Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK) for the 2025 midterm elections, has confirmed that the party was fully prepared to file its certificates of candidacy (COC) on October 7 or 8.

“We’re filing our COC either on October 7 or 8 in the morning. Before that, we’ll have a mass, proceed to Comelec, and then hold a press conference,” Archival said during an interview on October 2.

MANDAUE CITY, Philippines — The Commission on Elections in Central Visayas (Comelec-7) is expecting the increase of aspirants to file their Certificates of the Candidacy (COCs) towards the end of the filing on October 8.

Lawyer Francisco Pobe, Comelec-7 officer-in-charge regional election director, said that  generally, only a few had filed their Certificate of Candidacy in Cebu and Bohol as of October 2, the second day of filing.

Pobe said that the usual ‘Filipino way’, individuals would flock during the late schedule or almost the deadline.

 

Over 100 cops deployed in Mandaue City for COC filing security

MANDAUE CITY, Philippines —Over 100 police officers were deployed by the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) to secure the Commission on Elections in Mandaue City (Comelec-Mandaue) and to ensure the safety of those who wish to file their Certificates of Candidacy (COC).

MCPO Spokesperson, Police Lieutenant Colonel Mercy Villaro, said that aside from the 45 police officers stationed in the vicinity of the Comelec office, additional officers have been deployed on the streets for patrols, conducting checkpoints, and some are stationed at the headquarters as backup in case of emergencies.

Three candidates who will run as district representative and board member in Cebu have filed their Certificates of Candidacies (COCs) on the first day of the filing period.

These are 3rd District Rep. Pablo John “PJ” Garcia, who is seeking reelection for the same position under 1Cebu’s banner; Odysseus “Ody” Camarillo, a veterinary doctor from Argao; and Salvador Cariama, a farmer from Bogo City.

Garcia was the earliest to file among the three at exactly 8 a.m. on October 1, 2024, at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Cebu Provincial Office.

A 57-year-old taxi driver was the first to submit his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for Cebu City Council on the opening day of filing on October 1.

CEBU CITY, Philippines – A 57-year-old taxi driver was the first to submit his Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for Cebu City Council on the opening day of filing of COCs on October 1.

As the Commission on Elections (Comelec) officially opened the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) for the 2025 elections on October 1, Abraham Alcontin Verdida, a long-time taxi driver, was among the early filers, submitting his bid for a seat in Cebu City’s South District.

The filing period will run until October 8, with election day slated for May 12, 2025.

Comelec: Bets have until Oct. 8 to file COCs for 2025 elections

MANILA, Philippines —  Political hopefuls can file their respective certificates of candidacy (COCs) before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) starting today, October 1 up to October 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Comelec was referring to the political hopefuls, who are vying for the 18,272 national and local posts up for grabs in the May 12 elections next year.

According to the Comelec, the 18,272 political posts were around 200 more compared with the 2022 polls, with 75 of these intended for the first-ever Bangsamoro Parliamentary elections.

For national posts, there are 12 seats for senators, 254 for members of the House of Representatives, in addition to 63 for party list seats.
