Lapu-Lapu Naki Warriors scores upset win over Toledo Trojans in PCAP online tourney

LAPU-LAPU NAKI WARRIORS SCORES UPSET WIN

CEBU CITY, Philippines —The Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors upset the favored Toledo City Trojans in their all-Cebu clash in the ongoing Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Third Conference on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

It was an excellent day for the Lapu-Lapu City woodpushers after they won all their scheduled matches. They edged the Trojans,12.5-8.5 in their showdown. 

They also trounced the Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates,14-7, prior to facing Toledo City. 

Toledo City, however, didn’t give the win to Lapu-Lapu City easily. 

They managed to tie the blitz round,3.5-3.5, before they lost in the rapid round,5-9, to the Naki Warriors. 

In the blitz round, Lapu-Lapu collected three wins courtesy of Women’s International Master (WIM) Bernadette Galas, Bryle Arellano, and Allan Pason, who won over the Trojans’ team owner Jeah Jean Gacang, Christopher Tubalado, and Glicerio Pardillo Jr. respectively. 

The Trojans’ Richard Natividad and National Master (NM) Rogelio Enriquez Jr. beat Edsel Montoya and Anthony Makinano respectively. IM Rico  Mascariñas snatched an easy win in board 4 via default. 

In the rapid round, Montoya, WIM Galas, Arellano, and Makinano won their matches against Natividad, Gacang, Tubalado, and NM Enriquez Jr. respectively. Each victory was worth two points. 

Pason and Pardillo Jr. had a draw to earn one point apiece. 

IM Mascariñas earned his second victory via default in the rapid round while Ganzon beat Retanal.

On the other hand, Lapu-Lapu scored,6-1, in the blitz, and 8-6, in the rapid round to edge Surigao in their matchup. 

Meanwhile, Toledo City didn’t go empty handed after they defeated the Iriga City Oragons,12.5-8.5, prior to their match with Lapu-Lapu City.

In the other all-Cebu chess squad match, the Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors routed the Cebu City Machers,15-6. 

Lapu-Lapu’s double victory helped them climb two spots higher in the southern division standings. 

From sixth, they are now at the No. 4 spot with,3-2, (win-loss) record behind Toledo City that remained at third place with the same win-loss record, but with a higher accumulated total points.

Cordova climbed one place higher in the standings at eighth place with,1-3, record. The Machers descended to the bottom place in the standings with, 0-4, record.

The reigning champions, the Iloilo Kisela Knights remain at the top spot with an unbeaten,5-0, record while the Negros Kingsmen, also undefeated, is at second place with 4-0, record.
