Montejo, Lim finally top Cepca weekly online blitz chess tourney
CEBU CITY, Philippines — Veteran woodpushers’ Norman Jasper Montejo and Eladio Lim III finally clinched the weekly tournament titles of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) Weekly Chess Online: The Barracks Chess Club Blitz Series on Sunday, October 24, 2021.
Montejo settled for third place in the All-Cepcans category last October 17’s weekly competition while Lim III settled for second place in the Cepcans-B category.
However, Montejo and Lim III had a different outing last Sunday when they emerged on top of the all-Cepcans and the Cepcans B categories respectively.
The 37-year-old Montejo of Catbalogan City finished the nine-round Swiss system competion with 7.5 points.
Behind him was 12-year-old Cebuana chess sensation Kristina Belano who scored 7.0 points to finish second.
National Master (NM) Jerish John Velarde settled for third place with 6.5 points while former weekly champion, NM Jasper Rom placed fourth with 6.5 points as well. NM Rom had a lower tie-break points than NM Velarde, thus he settled for fourth place.
Peterson Sia (5.5) and NM Leonardo Alidani (5.0) claimed the fifth and sixth places respectively.
In the Cepcans-B, Lim III, a 64-year-old civil engineer based in Tacloban City scored 24 points to top the Cepcans-B category.
Norman Martin Olayvar, who also scored 24 points, settled for second for having a lower winning-rate than Lim III. The third to fifth placers were Leo Lofranco (23), Edwin Cablao (22), and Randy Cabuncal (22).
Last Sunday’s online chess tilt was sponsored by the Barracks Chess Club of John Velarde.
