Harvey Duke Harris III chess tourney returns in Jan. 2023 in Cebu City

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Harvey Duke Harris III Annual Chess Tournament returns on Jan. 7 and 8, 2023, at the Cebu Chess Hub in SM Seaside City Cebu. 

The tournament, which started in 2017 to honor the nephew of Grandmaster (GM) Enrico Sevillano who passed away in 2016, will provide Cebuano chess players another top-notch chess tournament. 

Harvey Duke Harris III is the son of GM Sevillano’s sister, Guadalupe Sevillano. He was gunned down at home in Lexington, Kentucky, USA in August of 2016. He was 17.

Guadalupe Sevillano is best known in Cebu as the  Far East Bank Tournament Women Chess Champion back in the day. 

The tournament will have a nine-round Swiss system format with 30 minutes playing time and five second increment. 

The champion takes home P5,000, while the second placer will receive P3,000, and P2,000 for the third placer. 

The fourth placer will get P1,000, while the fifth to 10th placers each receives P500. The top female, top 16-under, and top 12-under will each pocket P1,000.

The tournament director, International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap expects around a hundred chess players to enlist in this tournament in 2023.
