CEBU CITY, Philippines — Cebu City policemen have made good their promise to file charges against the men involved in a Dec. 3 street fight over a woman along General Maxilom Ave. in Barangay Kamputhaw this city.

Police Major Nolan Tagsip, Abellana Police Station chief, said that they had already filed alarm and scandal charges on Dec. 9, 2022, against the five men, who were identified, as those involved in the fistfight.

Tagsip also said that they also filed charges against three other men, who remained unidentified as of this time.

“May this serve as a warning to those having a good time, nga dapat ang pag-inom ibutang sa tiyan og dili sa ulo,” Tagsip said.

(May this serve as a warning to those having a good time, that if they drink, they must put the alcohol on their stomach and not on their head.)

Tagsip said that policemen from the Abellana Police Station filed the cases against these men because the area where the street fight happened was under their jurisdiction.

For his part, Police Colonel Ireneo Dalogdog, chief of Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said that they were still trying to identify and locate the other three unidentified individuals, but cases were already filed against them.

“Para maging batayan, magiging deterrence, baka may ibang kabataan pa po, mga tao pa na gustong manggulo at iisipin nila na ang police ay hindi magsasampa ng kaso, kaya gagawin pa nila ulit. So this time around, tinutuloy na natin yung pagsampa ng kaso,” Dalogdog said.

(This will serve as an example, to be a deterrence, who knows there might be other young men there, who would want to cause trouble and who would think that the police would not file a case against them, so they would do this again. So this time around, we pushed through with the filing of the case.)

Tagsip said that investigation showed that the fight started after a drunk man allegedly tried to win over a woman, who was with other male companions in an establishment in the area.

The woman rejected the drunk man’s efforts and left with his male companions.

However, the drunk man waited outside as the group exited, the drunk man allegedly punched the smallest man in the group and that started the melee.

With the woman’s companions, raining punches on the drunk man.

Bystanders tried to pacify the group, but the street fight continued until police arrived.

Tagsip said that the street fight was posted online by a netizen and this went viral.
