LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines — Senior Citizens in Cordova town, who were not enrolled in the Social Pension program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), will now receive a P500 monthly financial assistance from the town.

This was announced by Cordova Mayor Cesar “Didoy” Suan during the flagraising ceremony on Monday morning, Dec. 12, 2022.

Suan said that they were targeting to start the distribution of the financial assistance to senior citizens on Dec. 19, 2022.

“Karong Dec. 19, kadtong mga senior citizen nga wala gyud maapil sa pila na katuig nga naghandom ug nangandoy nga makadawat og pension, karong Dec. 19 ang tanan nga wala makadawat og pension nga senior citizen, ato na silang tagaan,” Suan said.

(On Dec. 19, those senior citizens, who were not included for a couple years and who dreamed and wished that they could receive a pension, on Dec. 19, all senior citizens who did not receive a pension, we will give them (a pension).”

Suan said that the giving of financial assistance to senior citizens was part of their campaign promise during the election in May this year.

“This is just a plaque sa ilang kahago nga ang ilang anak engineer na, ang ilang anak doktor na ba, ang ilang anak maestra na. Tungod sa ilang pagkugi ug paghago,” he added.

(This is just a plaque for their hard work that their child has become an engineer now, that their child has become a doctor now, that their child has become a teacher now. This is because of their hard work and their efforts.)

Councilor Lemuel Pogoy, chairman of the Committee on Family welfare, also said that each senior citizen would receive P1,000 financial assistance that would cover the month of November and December.

Cordova has more than 4,000 registered senior citizens, however, 2,049 of them were not enrolled in the social pension program of DSWD due to the DSWD’s strict qualifications.
